IMG_8781IMG_8990IMG_9469IMG_8808IMG_8448Our beautiful little barrier island in northern Florida offers up plenty of pristine beaches, quaint walkable downtown, top-notch restaurants, fantastic water activities and plenty of history.  But did you know Amelia Island has 13 MILES of unspoiled beaches, most with free public access? Or that we have 42 MILES of scenic biking and hiking trails?  What about that it was named for a princess and was a home to wayward pirates?  How about that it has 117 holes of golf with 7 holes on the Atlantic Ocean?  And that it has a 50 BLOCK National Historic District with 100-plus restaurants (more than 30 within walking distance from our inn)!  Did you know that 8 FLAGS have flown over the island since 1564?  Learn even more when you come to stay awhile! See you soon on the island.

Wedding Garden No Secret

February 28th, 2016 by Charles Young

Let us help you plan you intimate, small, romantic wedding… at the Blue Heron Inn.  The idea of a  “Secret Garden” wedding area here at the Blue Heron all began with an idea from my incredibly smart husband, David.  (Of  course I had some good input, too!)  First, we moved the fence back to enlarge the area right behind the pool.  Next, we cleared out small brush to create cool pathways.  Then we added intimate lanterns, lighting and an iron arbor, found at a local antique store.  Last but not least – a fountain for the relaxing sound of flowing water. We can’t wait for you to see the final rendition…beautiful for small weddings, receptions, or just a “romantic get-a-away!”

Searching for Shark Teeth at Fort Clinch

August 28th, 2013 by Charles Young

Shark teeth.JPG

We spent about an hour near the fort to look for shark teeth that get deposited on the beach whenever the Corps of Engineers dredge the channel between Amelia and Cumberland Islands.  We were lucky to find three teeth and our guests have found many more.

Many people don’t realize that our tiny little island hosts a beautiful, award-winning state park, Fort Clinch.  This 10,000-plus acre park boasts the title, “National Gold Medal Winner” and is America’s only two-time winner.  Not only is it home to the Great Florida Birding Trail and other floral and fauna, you can bask on its pristine beaches, search for rare shells and shark teeth, and take in some history there!   This park provides a critical habitat for numerous wildlife such as white tailed deer, bobcats and raccoons!  With its numerous hiking and biking trails, don’t be surprised if you run into one!  The first weekend of every month the park holds its Civil War Fort Garrisons.  History comes alive as costumed soldiers and civilians recreate life as it might have been during the War Between the States.  Activities include artillery and medical demonstrations, soldier drills, and duties from the Fort’s laundry, infirmary, kitchen, barracks, quartermaster and carpenter’s shops.

Love and Play Package

February 2nd, 2013 by Charles Young

You Have My Heart, Sweet Valentine LoveLove romantic comedies?  If so, you won’t want to miss Almost, Maine, a hilarious yet touching celebration of love at the Amelia Community Theatre throughout February.  Set in the mythical town of Almost, Maine, this play, with its large cast of 19, presents nine different stories of couples who fall in and out of love in unexpected and surprising ways, all on the same cold, clear, moonless night.  Lead director Geoffrey King, enjoyed being able to show a slice from so many different relationships, each dealing with different characters and different circumstances.  You’ll meet “love-lost, love-found, love-rediscovered, and love-appreciated.”  A quirky part of the play involves a woman demanding that her boyfriend “return” all the love she has given him.  In another part, a woman carries her broken, hardened heart around in a sack as she keeps watch for the Northern Lights.  Director Laura Swaim believes everyone can relate to most of the scenarios.  Shows run the weekends of Feb. 7-9, 14-16, and 21-23 and at 2 pm on Sunday, Feb. 17.  The theater is just a few walking blocks from the Blue Heron Inn.  Let us arrange a romantic dinner for you before the show! Come celebrate your special romance with us at the Blue Heron Inn.

For more information on Almost, Maine please visit https://www.ameliacommunitytheatre.org/.

For this event we are offering two complimentary tickets to the play Almost, Maine with a two night minimum.  Advance reservations for this offer must be made by calling 904-445-9034.

Boneyard Beach…Cool! No Bones About It!

January 7th, 2013 by Charles Young

The area around Amelia Island is just brimming with natural wonders!  Take Boneyard Beach, for example.  Don’t let the name scare you – it’s not full of bones – just salt-washed skeletons of live oak and cedar trees that have fallen onto the beach due to beach erosion.  They remain there until the tide takes them out or they become fully eroded.  What you have is a fascinating display of super-large driftwood and a photographer’s dream!  Boneyard Beach is located at the northern most tip of Big Talbot Island, about a 20 minute drive from Amelia Island and a perfect place for a picnic lunch.  There are many cool trails to explore there that provide diverse habitats for bird-watching and nature study.  After exploring on foot consider launching a boat from the north end of the island to fish and tour the salt marshes.  Or consider renting a kayak and taking a guided tour with Kayak Amelia (888) 30-KAYAK.  Kayak tours require advanced reservations.

Fresh Seafood at its Best!

August 27th, 2012 by Charles Young

Love fresh seafood?  Then don’t miss the recently opened Timoti’s Fry Shak!  In addition to offering daily specials, Carlin Catanzaro, manager, says the grilled fish and shrimp tacos and the fried shrimp baskets are some of the more popular items on the menu.  She adds that Timoti’s supports the local community by buying fresh produce from the downtown Farmer’s Market, local wild shrimp, and even local beers (try the Intuition line brewed in nearby Jacksonville)!  Located in the heart of the historic district (and within walking distance from the Blue Heron Inn), Timoti’s is a great place to hangout for a good bite or cold beer.  Even the kids can enjoy their own magical ship!
